Description

Frys Chocolate Cream - an old favourite - rich chocolate with smooth, creamy fondant centre. And did you know that this is one of the oldest chocolate bars in the world? Amazingly, it was launched by Fry's in 1866. How cool is that!

And the best thing is, because you get 3 bars you can enjoy it for a long time... (or scoff a bar quickly if you're like me... and still have 2 left to repeat the process!!!)

If you’re anything like us, you might love Fry’s Chocolate Cream. These delicious retro chocolate bars are rich inside and out – and beautiful, too, if it comes to it. In the middle, melt-in-the-mouth cream fondant, and on the outside, a wrapping of silky, soft dark chocolate. What more could you want to satisfy a sweet tooth? They’re a great pick for anyone, young or old.

This particular Fry’s chocolate bar is one of the oldest chocolate bars in the world (though only in terms of creation; the ones on the shelves are nice and fresh!). It was launched in 1866, and probably evolved from Fry’s Cream Stick, which was produced in 1853. This was probably the first chocolate bar to have a different flavoured filling; no wonder Fry’s cream is such an appealing-sounding phrase! Clearly, this chocolate bar is one the world loves, because it has survived for over 100 years. That’s not a bad record, even in the old-fashioned sweets world!

The company was founded by Joseph Fry, who started making chocolate sometime around 1759. The company went through several different names and locations, and Joseph Fry patented a method for grinding beans using a steam engine, which was responsible for introducing factory techniques to the chocolate making process. He was a pretty big influencer in the chocolate world! The company was then passed fully into the control of Joseph’s sons when he died in 1835, and it merged with Cadbury’s in 1919. The name Fry’s was dropped in 1981, but it’s still one many of us know and remember fondly.

Fry’s chocolate has been popular for years, and in World War II, a Fry’s chocolate bar would be issued to bomber crews in the RAF before they flew. That’s a pretty big commendation, and pilots probably really appreciated a good sugar hit before taking to the skies. You might not be facing quite such daunting tasks in your average day, but the creamy, silky bars are still a perfect pick-me-up to give you a burst of energy and fill your stomach up.

Many of our customers remind us of the famous Frys TV adverts of the 60s and 70s. George Lazenby - famous for his role as James Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service - was played The Big Fry Guy in the 1960s. Apparently he was chosen for the role of 007 after his appearances in Frys TV adverts! In 1975, Frys Chocolate Cream was advertised by Twiggy. She was at the peak of her fame and so this TV advert went down a treat for Frys and their range of chocolate bars.

The Fry company may have started out with just a plain bar, but they didn’t stop there, and today, there are five different flavours, so plenty of choice for everyone. Options include raspberry cream, strawberry cream, orange cream, peppermint cream, and chocolate cream. Phew, that’s a lot of cream! The company was more adventurous in the past, and experimented with a whole host of other flavours. These included Fry’s Pineapple Cream, Fry’s Fruit Medley, and Fry’s Five Centre, with an orange, lime, pineapple, strawberry and raspberry filling. The Five Centre and the Fruit Medley may have been much the same treat. It seems likely that the company switched and changed the combinations in the Five Centre at various times, so you may remember fillings we haven’t got listed here!

They also dabbled in spirits as flavours, producing a Berry Margarita, a Piña Colada, and a cream liqueur called Velvet Dream. Sadly for those who fancy an adult twist to their confectionery, these flavours didn’t live past the 1990s. That said, Fry’s are also thought to have produced the world’s first Easter egg, so we have a lot to thank them for when it comes to celebrating!

Today, Fry’s chocolate bars are just as delicious and appealing as they ever were. They’re even vegetarian, and wrapped in very swish, distinctive dark packaging. For anyone who wants to be able to boast that they’ve eaten one of the oldest chocolate bars in the world, they’re the perfect choice – and you can’t say that about most sweets you buy. Joseph Fry left a pretty amazing legacy behind him, delighting children and adults with his creativity, and continuing to do so many decades after his death
