Who is Oor Wullie?
Translated roughly to “Our William” – still struggling, think Mancunian “Our Kid” – Oor Wullie is the subject of his own comic strip beloved by Scots.
Originating in 1937 in the Sunday Post newspaper, this comic strip follows the misadventures of young Wullie, usually involving “get rich quick” schemes much to the despair of his “Ma” and “Pa” and local policeman/nemesis “PC Murdoch”.
So beloved is this character that to mark his 80th anniversary in 2016, 55 5ft sculptures were placed around Dundee and nicknamed “The Bucket Trail” – much akin to the Gromit Unleashed project in and around Bristol, it was so popular that The BIG Bucket trail launched in 2019 with each of the statues was auctioned off for charity.
Oor Wullie is often depicted sitting on a bucket (hence The Bucket Trail), with his trademark spiky hair and dungarees. Here on Oor Wullie’s Highland Toffee, however, he is seen (as is usual) in a scrape atop a Highland Cow, surely a link to where Highland Toffee gets its name and a nod to what makes this toffee chew bar unique!
Braw meaning?
Look closely on the packet of our Highland Toffee bar and you’ll see the phrase ‘braw chew bar’. Braw is a Scottish term for fine, pleasant, or excellent, apt for a toffee chew bar of this quality and we agree!
Highland toffee is a flavoursome, buttery, chewy toffee – there’s no need for a toffee hammer here! With so many toffee options available from treacle toffee slabs to creamy English toffee, a Highland Toffee bar is unique and different from other toffees. Whilst everyone has their favourite go-to toffee for that long car journey or a special treat, we love Highland Toffee
