Double Dips - History

But where did the Double Dip come from?

Swizzels Matlow, the makers of the Double Dip, were a true British icon based in the heart of the Peak District. They had been famous originally for their gummy sweets but this all changed with the launch of childhood favourites such as Love Hearts, Parma Violets and, of course, the Double Dip.

Swizzels were keen to create a sweet that wasn’t just delicious but also interactive!  They wanted to create a sweet that combined nostalgia with modern flavourings. Yes, this was designed as a true retro sweet! To do this Swizzels used one of the most traditional sweets, sherbert and tried to make this as fun and interactive as possible with the addition of the Swizzelstick!

Whilst the taste of sherbert and the edible swizzle stick is a truly retro treat, the true fun of a Double Dip is in the way you eat them. Who can forget dipping the Swizzelstick into the packet to grab the sherbert inside There is also a certain skill to getting just the right amount of sherbert on each dip but I'm sure we've all had enough practice before!

Of course, the Double Dip is four sweets in one – first, you have the Swizzelstick itself, a culinary masterpiece. Then you can choose to dip in pure orange sherbert fizz, cherry sherbet fizz, or the ultimate combination of both together: pure sherbet perfection.

These delicious sweets hit their peak popularity in the 1980s, in 1989 becoming the best selling sweet in the whole of Ireland! Not only is the Double Dip popular here but also in Australia, Germany and somewhat surprisingly, Norway. In America, they also have their version, the Fun Dip, although we believe the double-dip is far superior.

Not only that, but we also have Love Hearts Dip. If you love Double Dips or Love Hearts then you'll love this. A candy floss flavoured Swizzelstick with Orange, Raspberry and Lemon fizzy sherbet is a whole new experience for Double Dip lovers.

The Swizzels Double Dip remains beloved by British adults and children alike, and with a company that takes such pride in the quality of their products, it's no wonder that Swizzels Double Dips are still firmly a fizzy favourite. They are perfect as a go-to pocket money treat and loved by children (and adults) of all ages.
